How to Choose an Amazon Tour Operator in Colombia (Checklist & Red Flags)

How to choose an Amazon tour operator in Leticia, Colombia: registration, Indigenous guides, group size, what is included, wildlife ethics and red flags.

Back to Field Notes

Short answer: choose an Amazon tour operator that is legally registered, works with local Indigenous guides, keeps groups small, tells you exactly what is included, and treats wildlife with respect. Price matters, but in the Amazon the cheapest option often means crowded boats, rushed dolphin sightings and communities that see little of the money.

Leticia has dozens of tour offers, from street kiosks to lodges. Here is how to tell them apart before you book.

1. Check that the operator is legally registered

In Colombia, tourism providers must be listed in the national tourism registry (Registro Nacional de Turismo, RNT). Ask for the RNT number and check it. A registered operator is accountable, carries the required policies and can issue proper invoices.

2. Ask who guides you — and where they are from

The guide shapes the whole trip. Local Indigenous guides read the forest, the river and the weather in ways no script can match, and hiring them keeps income in the communities you visit. Ask which languages the guide speaks and whether you will have the same guide throughout.

At Colombia Remote Adventures, expeditions are led by Matapi and Yucuna families who have guided travelers since 2014, with bilingual guides in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

3. Private or group tour?

  • Shared group tours: lower price, fixed schedule, larger boats. Fine for a quick look.
  • Private tours: your dates, your pace, a small boat and a guide focused on you. Better for wildlife — quiet canoes see far more than full speedboats.

Whatever you choose, ask for the maximum group size in writing.

4. Get a clear list of what’s included

Hidden costs are the most common complaint. A good quote lists:

  • River transfers (shared or private)
  • Accommodation type (private room? private bathroom? mosquito nets?)
  • Meals and drinking water
  • Entrance fees and community contributions
  • Airport pickup and drop-off
  • What is not included (flights, tips, tourism fee on arrival, insurance)

5. Look at how they treat wildlife

Red flags: feeding or touching animals, chasing dolphins with engines running, holding wild animals for photos, or “monkey islands” where animals are fed for tourists. Good operators turn the engine off near dolphins and let animals decide the distance. More in our note on pink river dolphins.

6. Read reviews in the right places

Check TripAdvisor and Google reviews, and read the negative ones: how did the operator respond? Look for recent reviews that mention guides by name, food, safety and punctuality — details are harder to fake than stars.

7. Ask about safety and communication

  • Is there a first-aid kit and a guide trained to use it?
  • Are life jackets provided on every boat?
  • How do they communicate in areas without signal?
  • What happens if the weather or river level forces a change?

Red flags checklist

  • No RNT number or unwilling to share it
  • Price far below others with no explanation
  • Vague itinerary (“jungle tour, many activities”)
  • Pressure to pay everything in cash, upfront, on the street
  • Animal handling or feeding presented as an attraction

FAQ

Should I book an Amazon tour in advance or in Leticia?

Book in advance for private tours and high season (December–January, Easter, July–August). Last-minute street offers are usually shared group tours.

Are private Amazon tours worth it?

For wildlife and meaningful time with communities, yes: smaller boats are quieter and the schedule adapts to animals, not to a group timetable.
